After Illinois Auditor General William Holland retired last fall, the General Assembly appointed state representative Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) as his replacement.

Mautino, the former Deputy Leader in the general assembly, was the anointed pick of powerful House Speaker Michael J. Madigan (D-Chicago) and sailed nearly unanimously through the legislative chambers.

Now, Frank Mautino faces scrutiny – not from political groups – but from citizen watchdogs.

On Thursday – the Edgar County Watchdogs – quantified $213,338.31 in gasoline and campaign vehicle repairs paid by Mautino’s political committee since 2005 into one hometown vendor: Happy’s Super Service Station in Spring Valley.

The ‘gas’ and ‘gas and vehicle repairs’ averaged $20,000 per year or roughly $55 per day over the last ten years and nine months!

We crunched the numbers even further at Forbes and added new details to the unfolding scandal. For example, on itemized transactions, there are 86 instances where Mautino spent between $1,000 and $5,811 on ‘gas’ and ‘vehicle repairs.’

Mautino’s gone silent and isn’t answering questions. The service station owner isn’t answering questions and is also a local Spring Valley alderman.

The people of Illinois deserve an auditor with basic integrity. In Illinois, this ‘integrity’ must be proven.

Frank Mautino must open his books immediately. The people deserve to see the itemized receipts of exactly how he spent this campaign money and if any laws were broken.
